Making an insulation using NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt should be carried out according to the technical design, in accordance with the current building regulations and the detailed guidelines for the design and execution of insulation contained in NEXLER Insulation Systems and the Technical Data Sheet.
The bituminous felt should be installed in ambient temperatures of above 0°C, this requirement applies to the time of day and night.
Do not carry out insulation work during strong winds and precipitation.
The substrate should meet the following requirements:
- dry substrate (no visible traces of moisture or darkening caused by moisture),
- clean substrate (the surface is free of dust, oil stains, grease and other contaminants),
- smooth substrate (local unevenness and cavities in the surface of concrete do not exceed ± 5 mm),
- even substrate (the gaps between the surface of the substrate and a 4 m long patch placed on the concrete substrate do not exceed 10 mm).
Before welding NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt it is recommended to prime old bitumen layers with water-based bitumen products for example NEXLER BITFLEX Primer, or solvent-based bitumen primers for example NEXLER Penetrator G7.
NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt should be attached by welding to an old primed bituminous substrate or concrete substrate. Application should be carried out after the priming agent has completely dried (or cured).
As a result of heating both the substrate and the underside of the bituminous felt with a burner, the thin protective plastic foil melts, the asphalt is slightly melted and the bituminous felt sticks evenly to the substrate. Maintain a bituminous felt overlap min. 8 - 10 cm wide along the length of the felt strip and an overlap min. 12 cm wide at the joint perpendicular to the length of the felt strip. An asphalt outflow of approx. 0,5 cm in width over the entire length of the welded overlap is required.
NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt is finished with fine sand on the upper surface and features a 10 cm wide edge strip facilitating the welding of the subsequent sheet of renovation bituminous felt.
NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt is primarily intended for the execution of a two-layer renovation of existing old roof coverings. The heated asphalt compound on the strips ensures adhesion of the bituminous felt to the substrate. Depending on the degree of roof dampness, use ventilation chimneys – 1 per 50 - 100 m², and then weld a highly modified top layer bituminous felt with appropriate properties.
In the case of application bituminous felt on a concrete substrate with insufficient adhesion, it is recommended, in addition to welding, to additionally secure the NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt with mechanical fasteners with a flat washer at a rate of 3 pcs./m².
NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt is designed for installation on horizontal roof surfaces, except for the edge zones of roofs, i.e. over-gutter strips, roof ridge and side edges. For edge zones and vertical elements, use weldable bituminous felt without a specially formed underside, e.g. NEXLER PJ PYE PV200 S40. Zones that require a different type of bituminous felt should be 0,7 - 1,0 m wide (for over-gutter strips, roof ridge and side edges) or 0,5 - 0,7 m wide (for vertical elements on the roof such as chimney, attic). The use of felt welded on the entire surface of the felt in these areas will ensure that the undersurface of the felt is thoroughly bonded to the renovated substrate. In the case of NEXLER Renovation Base bituminous felt, such a bonding is difficult, but can be achieved by heating the underside of the felt for a longer period of time.
