NEXLER NOₓ Cut — future-proof roofs that neutralize harmful nitrogen oxides

Can a roof actively clean the air of harmful pollutants? Absolutely! Modern building materials make it possible. We have introduced innovative roofing felts that use NOₓ Cut technology to neutralize toxic nitrogen oxides. Find out how this revolutionary technology is all about and why it's worth investing in sustainable construction.

It only takes 2 minutes to read the article. What you will learn from the article:

  • What nitrogen oxides are and their effects

  • How NOₓ Cut technology works

  • What roofing felts are available with NOₓ Cut air purification technology

What are nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and why are they harmful?

Nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) are among the most harmful atmospheric pollutants. Their adverse effects on health and the environment are often more severe than those of other common pollutants like carbon monoxide or sulfur dioxide. Nitrogen oxides are primarily produced by the combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles and industrial furnaces.

How does the NOₓ Cut technology work?

The NOₓ Cut, an innovative third-generation photocatalytic nanocoating, effectively converts harmful nitrogen oxides into safe nitrates (NO₃⁻). Thanks to its unique photocatalytic properties, this coating doesn't wear out during reactions. This means that after the nitrogen oxide oxidation process, the coating's structure is restored, ready for further air purification. This technology operates through a simple yet highly effective three-step process:

1. Nitrogen oxide deposition: harmful nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) settle and are absorbed onto the felt's surface.

2. Photocatalytic decomposition: under the influence of UV radiation from sunlight, the nanocoating actively decomposes the NOₓ into harmless nitrate ions (NO₃⁻) and water vapour and during this process, the nanocoating simultaneously regenerates itself.

3. Natural rinsing: rain washes away the resulting nitrates from the roof. This water, now enriched with nitrates, is safe and even beneficial for watering plants, acting as a natural fertilizer.

The NOₓ Cut technology roofing felts

NEXLER offers three premium roofing felts that utilize The NOₓ Cut technology, effectively eliminating harmful nitrogen oxides. Highly modified with two types of SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene), a synthetic rubber polymer, these felts are exceptionally durable, strong, flexible, and resistant to high temperatures, backed by a multi-year system warranty. These felts are suitable for both new roofs and renovation of existing roofs.

Experts have praised the high quality of our products, with NEXLER NOₓ Cut technology earning a gold medal in the ecology category at the 4th Dach Forum Fair.

Advantages of NOₓ Cut bituminous felts

The NOₓ Cut roofing felts offer some impressive benefits:

  • They actually neutralize toxic exhaust fumes in the air, with independent lab tests confirming over 25 mg/m²/h.

  • Rainwater runoff from roofs with NOₓ Cut can be safely collected and used to water plants or even as fertilizer.

  • Ultimately, by cleaning the air, these felts help reduce the risk of serious respiratory illnesses like asthma and lung cancer.

Constructing sustainably with NEXLER NOₓ Cut roofing felts

Both EU guidelines and ESG standards aim to ensure that modern construction significantly reduces its negative impact on the environment. The current nitrogen oxide emission standard is 40 µg/m³, but the World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for a stricter limit of 10 µg/m³. To meet these stricter standards, cities may be compelled to introduce additional car bans in their centres and designate more clean transport zones.

Utilizing NEXLER NOₓ Cut can effectively reduce NOₓ emissions, thus supporting the pursuit of a cleaner atmosphere and mitigating the risk of further restrictions. This enables investors to implement ecological projects that comply with the latest requirements, while also gaining a durable and economical roofing solution that improves urban air quality.

The NOₓ Cut technology isn't just a move toward ecological construction, but also an investment in a healthier future.
